If you want a stand-alone AND another antivirus for extra security (like me), there's also few options. Keep in mind to throw out ratings byt he company that manufactures one or the other. Ask ! Do I just leave MSE installed alone?

Well worth it. The reason MSE is no longer effective is because M$ has not updated it as vigourously and as regularly as other security companies have updated their products. Unless you go on the extremely seedy parts of the internet and/or intentionally download said malware, you would not have that many infections if you were using MSE. Never like MSE much, so I've got that disabled.
There program has always, ALWAYS, out performed any free or paid for Anti Virus out there. Pay for Malwarebytes - a small price and I used their free version for years. So far over the last three years or so none of them have.
