My wireless internet is now not working. After seeking to find said "slide switch" and couldn't find it, I found that the post regarding the F2 key was indeed correct. my computer randomly disconnected from the wireless connectivity, but as much as i know about how the Fn and F2 button scenarios work for my laptop, well, they're not working. Now the battery is back and Inspiron 1710 reacts correctly to switching the switch.

I have dell inspiron 1525 and recently downgraded it from Vista to XP. I checked the BIOS, and the wireless card is enabled there.

I remember googling and downloading sort of drivers that apparently worked. I ran it, and the bluetooth light magically went on, didn't even have to reboot or anything! Click on Network. - 5. So simply pressing the F2 key on its own (without the Fn key) should do the trick.
