Did you check whether Windows Update created a Restore Point you can go back to? I then tested the sleep functionality and it was working as normal. You've been done in by a typical M$ update that corrupts your system.

I do have an anti-virus installed and I have also tried uninstalling everything recently installed but it seems to be getting worse.
