Modern 64-bit systems can run 32-bit and 64-bit software because of a very simple and easy solution: two separate Program Files directories. My biggest frustration is that my (South African) version of QuickBooks 2010 cannot ‘see' Office and I therefore cannot send PDF docs via email straight out of QB. I tested it . One thing to note is that 3D graphic programs and games do not benefit much, if at all, from switching to a 64-bit computer, unless the program is a 64-bit program.
